[Mead] Sentence weighting

Dear all,
 
 I am newbie in summarization. I am trying to device a coherent text summarizer. For comparision I selected MEAD (version 3.07), though it doesn't claim to produce coherent extracts. One thing I noted in MEAD that the sentence weights are linear combination of, 1. distance from centre 2. position 3. length. 
 
 So can anyone please tell me how the position and length based weighing works?
 
 Any suggestions appreciated.
